Our History
Kulana Bike® was founded in 1968 by John Simpson, a cycling enthusiast and entrepreneur. John got the idea to start his own bike company after becoming frustrated with the low-quality beach cruisers available at the time. He believed that a better-made bike with higher quality components could appeal to the growing beach lifestyle in Southern California.
John leased a small workshop in Culver City and began hand-building the first Kulana bikes using steel frames sourced from domestic suppliers. The early Kulana models featured comfortable saddles, wide handlebars, and balloon tires perfect for cruising along the beach. John’s attention to detail and craftsmanship paid off. The Kulana bikes were an instant hit with beachgoers who appreciated their smooth ride, comfort, and timeless styling.
Throughout the 1970s, Kulana Bike® grew rapidly as demand for beach cruisers skyrocketed. We moved production to a larger facility and focused exclusively on building beach cruisers to the highest standards. As more cyclists discovered the Kulana difference of quality and comfort, our bikes became synonymous with Southern California’s laidback beach lifestyle.
In the 1980s, we expanded our catalog to include tandem bikes that allowed couples, friends, and families to enjoy leisurely rides together. The 1980s also saw Kulana Bike® become a national brand as we shipped our bikes to specialty retailers across the United States.
Today, Kulana Bike® continues to be family-owned and operated. We’ve modernized production using advanced manufacturing techniques while staying true to John Simpson’s founding commitment to quality, comfort, and craftsmanship.
